At parties, they are the ones walking around minding their own business. At times, they are patrolling the grounds and even catching up on some sleep. So who are these extraordinary party animals? Hazel the Weimaraner, CeCe the Chiweeni and Porter the Mini Australian Shepherd. Dogs: the college student's true best friend.

One might ask, though: how do these dogs handle loud music and a bunch of people? They must be very friendly dogs to be able to interact with people and other dogs constantly.

Kevin Lonkar, senior RPTA major, has had his dog, Hazel, in Macomb for two and a half years now. She was rescued as a puppy from mistreatment and was taken in by Lonkar.

"At parties Hazel roams around; she's very sociable and good with crowds," Lonkar said.

Goretty Mendoza, senior hotel management and Spanish major, is the owner of CeCe the Chiweeni. CeCe is a mix of a Chihuahua and a Daschund.

"I keep CeCe out at parties all the time. She loves to jump around from person to person, and when there are a lot of people, she wants someone to hold her at all times," Mendoza said.

Owners can make up for the loud, chaotic party scene by taking them to the dog park located at Ward and Grant Street in Macomb. The dog park is a very convenient place to go if there is no fenced in yard or no yard at all. Most dogs just enjoy being outside in general; it doesn't matter where.

"It's like a separate little community. You know the names of the dogs before you get a chance to find out their owners," Lonkar said.

Nicole Kavala, junior business management major, is the owner of a male, Mini Australian Shepherd named Porter.

"Porter likes being outside in the warm weather, but he definitely loves the snow," Kavala said. Having a dog might seem like all fun and games to some people, but there are many responsibilities and costs that come along with owning a dog. There are necessary shots and vet visits, and caring for them could even take time away from schoolwork.

Hazel Lonkar has been to every Western Illinois men's rugby game and practice since he has been at Western.

"I would have to say that my favorite thing to do back home with Hazel is go to the beach, but when we're in Macomb that's my favorite thing to do with Hazel. She always runs laps with the team before every practice," Lonkar said.

Lonkar, Kavala and Mendoza, like most, all have roommates here at Western.

"My roommates didn't care until Porter started getting a little crazy. He was very calm at first, but he's actually away at dog training school so he can behave," Kavala said.

They will never tell your secrets, and they will always be waiting for you when you get home; Hazel, Porter and CeCe are a man's true best friend.
