With some students running out of ideas and time for their gift shopping, the following recommendations made by various Western professors will surely help some students out of a jam.

Dr. Timothy Roberts, an associate professor of history at Western, recommended several books that he believes would peak the interests of students.

"In terms of biographies, there's an Andrew Jackson biography written by Jon Meacham called 'American Lion,' that's very good," said Roberts. "There's also a 2000-page spine-tingler by James Swanson called 'Manhunt,' that's about the search for John Wilkes Booth. I would also recommend, for a more modern history book, 'Coldest Winter," by David Halberstam on the Korean War."

"American Lion" is listed on Amazon.com for $12.25 and is described as, " a lively take on the seventh president's White House years. " "Manhunt" is listed at $11.20 and is described as detailing the greatest manhunt in American history. "Coldest Winter," is listed at $11.96 and is described as, "contemporary history in its most literary and luminescent form, and provides crucial perspective on the Vietnam War and the events of today."

Charles McLeod, an associate professor of English, also had a novel that he thought would be perfect for students to buy.

"The last novel that I read was called 'Nobody Move," written by Denis Johnson. He won the National Book Award for his last book, 'Tree of Smoke,'" said McLeod. "It's about a cast of ne'er-do-wells in Bakersfield, Cal., who are after $1.3 million. I really think that students would enjoy it."

"Nobody Move," is listed on Amazon for $15.64 and is described by The New Yorker as " So noir it's almost pitch-black, this follow-up to Johnson's National Book Award-winning "Tree of Smoke" concerns a lovable loser named Luntz-barbershop-chorus member, Hawaiian-shirt wearer, and inveterate gambler-who is in debt to an underworld bad guy."

Terry Solomonson, an associate professor of music business, was the only professor not to recommend a book.

"I would tell a student to look at a Zoom H4N. It's basically this cool portable audio recorder. It came out a few years ago, and the company updates them a lot. It also kind of looks like a taser, which is cool," Solomonson said.

The Zoom H4N has a higher price tag compared to the other items, listed at $299, though it is modestly priced compared to other items in the same category. The recorder is described as a four-channel recorder, with two microphones covering 120 degrees. The recorder also includes a pre-amp, and various modes for specialized recording.

With these affordable and diverse suggestions from some of WIU's professors, you have no excuse to show up empty handed for your holiday gatherings.
