Cost of college on the rise

What will $50,000 buy? ?
Seven hundred and fourteen cases of Keystone, 37 iPod nanos, 22 Playstation 3 video game consoles and 22 32-inch HDTV sets on which to play the games and a year's tuition and fees at Western Illinois University.
Or it will pay for a single year at one of the priciest private universities in the country.
This year, for the first time, more than 50 private universities across the nation will charge students at least $50,000 per year in tuition.
Among them are such schools as Northwestern University, whose cost to attend, including books, has risen to $53,584. According to data from The Chronicle of Higher Education, this amounts to a 3.6 percent increase over the last school year.
"Our goal really is to find ways to be as fiscally prudent as possible," said Western Illinois President Al Goldfarb. "We're very careful with budgeting, we have to be. If you are guaranteeing for four years then you've got to figure out what the impact of an increase is going to be not only for this year but for the following year, year following and the year following that." ? ?
"Princeton Review, which really takes into account significant student input, we're in the list of Best Midwestern Colleges and Universities, one of the two publics in Illinois. The National Survey of Student Engagement, students recognize that they have more significant faculty actually when compared to peer institutions. The campus environment is ranked very high," Goldfarb said.
"In terms of returning veterans, GI Jobs magazines chose Western as one of the military friendly campuses," Goldfarb said. "The Pell Foundation visited Western because we graduate students from lower socio-economic backgrounds at a higher rate than the national average." ? ?
"This university, I think, does remarkable work with fairly limited resources and at the same time attempting to control costs," Goldfarb said. "We have outstanding academic programs, so very unique academic programs as well. We're a great academically excellent institution that's of great value." ? ?

Anyone that pays that much to attend a college is nuts.
I was a bit disappointed in this article. I thought it was going to delve deeper into the problem of college costs but instead it just sounded like a big advertisement for WIU. (Continued…)

Go to the Dirty Western bloatmeal post to learn why the bloat of too many administrators on campus is raising the cost of education for students.
