The Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center's annual Biggest Loser competition came to its conclusion last Tuesday night.

The total body weight percent lost was 71.75 inches, and the average weight lost was 9.9 pounds. The total amount of weight lost was 79.9 pounds.

"This competition is a stepping stone to the future, and everyone improved in some way," said Jim Kalcsits, campus recreation graduate assistant. "This year the average weight lost was more than it was last year. We hope that it will keep improving throughout the years."

To enter the competition, participants must pay a fee of $30 and have a doctor's note saying they can participate. After that, the competition begins. The contestants undergo a fitness assessment to find out where they stand in all of the health categories. They received eight personal training sessions with a campus recreation trainer, eight group workouts and three health education sessions.

"This competition is held so the participants can get a starting point in a new healthy lifestyle, and we prepare them with the tools to extend their workout," Kalcsits said.

All four teams reunited one last time to complete the last category of the competition. Their last challenge was to play a game of Jeopardy that consisted of questions concerning health information they learned throughout the course of the competition.

The green team, consisting of three females, Cassie Brimmer, junior agriculture major; Joy Jones, junior law enforcement and justice administration major; and Callie Petherick, senior pre-elementary education major, won the competition.

Brimmer and Petherick also won for individual achievements, as Brimmer lost the most weight and Petherick lost the most body weight percentage.

Neither Brimmer nor Petherick had used the rec center before but agreed they'll continue to come to the rec to maintain their new lifestyle.

"This competition was a great experience for me to go through, and I feel much more healthier now that I have gone through this," Brimmer said. "I loved working with my trainer, and I will continue working with him even though the competition is over."

"This is my second semester as a trainer at the rec," said Kyle Smith, campus recreation trainer and exercise science major. "The Biggest Loser competition is probably one of the best things about being a trainer here."
