Debate to shed some light

A hypothetical debate is set to address various issues inherent within the Macomb and Western Illinois University communities Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. in the University Union Heritage room.
Learning To Lead constructed the debate, which is titled "Civic Responsibility: Western Illinois University," in an attempt to diffuse the arguments associated with typical debates, according to Student Government Association Speaker of the Senate, Carlin Anderson.
"We wanted to get that blame game out of there so we decided the best way to do that would be to model it after the discussion that took place at Columbia University in the 1980s," Anderson said.
The debate at Columbia, titled "Constitution: That Delicate Balance," addressed national issues using hypothetical situations in regard to topics, such as the first amendment, national security and the insanity plea.
Columbia panelists included national icons such as former U.S. President Gerald Ford, CBS news anchor Dan Rather and associate justice for the Supreme Court Potter Stuart.
"What you have is people on a panel with a moderator sitting up and talking to these people in the abstract to kind of get them to sit back and open up discussion in a non-linear way," Anderson said.
"They will be playing different roles and seeing things as more of a hypothetical game and that."
Panelists range from police chief to university president to newspaper owner.
Seven people are set to sit on the panel, including University Provost Jack Thomas, SGA Senator Eric Haiman, Office of Public Safety Director Bob Fitzgerald, broadcasting professor and local reporter Patrick Stout, City Council Aldermen Clay Hinderliter, Dave Dorsett and Jude Kiah, director of Go West.
Anderson describes the debate as having a "volcano structure," a term that University Attorney David Eckerly helped establish.
"You have your base, which is made up of the panelists with the
hypotheticals already in their head, because I'm offering these hypotheticals ahead of time," Anderson said. "They can think outside in their perspective roles that they're going to play, so they form the base of my volcano."
The panelists' non-linear discussion lead to the top of the volcano, he added.
"What I view the top as is a perspective that it's not necessarily a good or bad community, because I don't think it's just black and white," Anderson said. "I think there's a lot of gray in there.
"I'm just trying to elevate the idea that 'I've never lived a day in your shoes, you've never lived a day in mine' and that everyone has a different perspective on how they would handle particular situation within their life and within a community," he added.

I think that race is still an issue in this country rather we want to admit it or not but I've come to realize that it is the continuing class division, race discrimination, and diveristy undermining that is keeping us from returning to the world stage as an economic power. (Continued…)
