"I would start by saying congratulations to Illinois State," said head coach Mark Hendrickson. "They certainly played well and deserved to win the football game as you saw. I'm proud of our team for never quitting. They fought to the end."
Even though redshirt freshman quarterback Wil Lunt had a career day with 188 passing yards and a touchdown, the Illinois State defense did not allow Western's offense to get anything going.
"If we give him enough time, he throws the ball," Hendrickson said. "We need to get him enough time, and you can credit the defensive line of Illinois State for that as well."
After a scoreless first quarter, Illinois State sophomore running back Cliffton Gordon put his team on the board with a one-yard touchdown run.
Senior kicker Zach Kutch expanded the lead to 10 with his first field goal attempt in the second quarter.
Kutch's next kick was blocked by senior cornerback Patrick Stoudamire later in the same quarter to give Western some momentum back.
"The defense held on as much as they could, and they got the ball in good field position a lot," Hendrickson said. "Of course several times they got the ball already in field goal position."
But the 'Necks could not hold on and Kutch's third field goal try went in and made the score 13-0.
"When things don't go the way you'd like it to in the first half offensively you challenge them, we just played a half and didn't score," Hendrickson said. "The challenge is let's play the second half and let's score a bunch. I guess they met some of that challenge."
The third quarter was more of the same as Kutch notched three more field goals before the 'Necks could get on the board, increasing their lead to 22-0.
Western was able to avoid a shutout when Lunt capped off a seven-play, 80-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Lito Senatus late in the third quarter.
"The simple answer is we had 11 guys doing what they should do during that drive, carrying out their techniques and assignments properly," Hendrickson said. "On the drives when that doesn't happen, with one or two guys break down on a play, then it is not successful."
