Nevertheless, Game Nite did not start out by inspiring a connection between the public and the university. Adopted from a similar program at University of Illinois-Champaign, it started two years ago as a means for students to relax and socialize.

Senior Library Specialist Julie Hannen, the director of Game Nite, not only believes in the function's ability to create bonds but also in its cultural and intergenerational ties.

"There is one family where the mom brings the children to Game Nite while the father studies," Hannen said.

Hannen also mentioned that one night she was playing cards with international students, and they taught each other games from their cultures with a deck of cards.

To its partakers, Game Nite is a way to make acquaintances and friendships. It also provides an escape from studying and entertainment normally not found at the library. To the Western Illinois University Libraries, it is a simple yet effective way to join the Macomb community with the university campus.

The Malpass Library hosts Game Nite the first Thursday of every month from 7-10 p.m. For more information, contact Hannen at 309/298-1105 or J-Hannen@wiu.edu.
