In the famous words of "Billy Madison" character Veronica Vaughn, "Some people float through life like pieces of crap."
Ignorance is bliss for college students, but there comes a time in each of our lives when we need to wake up and realize that a good life is not going to be handed to us.
What we as pupils need to understand is that our generation has a misconception of the career world and what it will be like after we graduate. The real world is all around us, but as college students we are so self-involved that we are ignorant to our own future.
Not knowing what is going on in our country has more of a negative effect than you may think. Because we are in a recession, our generation is facing a major problem: unemployment and debt after graduation.
Because college is causing those attending to be in debt, they should at least make sure the time spent in college is worth the amount they are paying. There are consequences to wasting time. So many unimportant things fill our lives such as watching television, checking new Facebook pictures every day and drinking. It is important to understand that time is money, and the more time you spend doing useless things, the harder it is going to be to find a good paying job after graduation.
Just attending and passing class is not enough anymore. Students can no longer rely on their degrees to get jobs. During this recession, students need to work harder than ever to get a job.
There are two different kinds of students in college today. Some go through the motions of college believing that the good life will be handed to them on a silver platter. You cannot expect to write for Rolling Stone magazine with only a major in journalism or run for office with a political science degree. These individuals choose not to get involved in their own future because they are blinded by ignorance.
Then there is the other college student who understands the importance of distinguishing themselves from the others. These individuals learn from the world around them, by realizing that our economy is causing everyone hardships and recognizes that they need to market themselves with experience. By doing this, they are preparing to enter a world full of adversity.
We cannot expect to be handed everything in life. It is important to be aware that our generation needs to work even harder to get to where we need to be. So the WC suggests that you start to apply yourself now and do not wait until the last minute to get involved in your own future.
