The evening consisted of a relaxing atmosphere to share with other people. One poet, Afsha Merchant, sophomore psychology major, read a poem about the things women should say to themselves.
"Sometimes women are treated unfairly, and it causes us to forget why we're important. I wrote this poem for women to remember that there is a reason for us to live as well," Merchant said.
She then proceeded to recite a stirring poem about the beauty and intelligence of women.
Erin McCarthy, a Western alumna, performed many songs, including an especially stirring rendition of one song that she dedicated to women everywhere, including those in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and other war-torn countries and cities.
For this particular song, McCarthy said she received inspiration from veterans who oppose the Iraqi war, she stated that she "could hear the emotion in the soldiers' voice, and the overburdening regret that they had, being ordered to kill innocent people."
Not only did students and alumni attend this event, but community members and faculty joined and performed pieces as well. Sandy Tracy performed a poem entitled, "Way To Go" that she drew on her own personal experiences to create.
Faculty members also performed selected readings provided by the coordinators of the event, as well as original pieces, as well.
The opportunity to perform selected readings is available for anyone.
McCarthy encourages more people to come out to have fun and support this event and to look out for the next Women's Open Mic event in November.
