Volleyball fails to rebound in loss

The Western Illinois volleyball team fell in an early 2-0 deficit and never recovered in a 3-1 loss at Southern Utah Saturday, Oct. 17.
The match opened with the two teams playing to a close score until the Thunderbirds used a 5-0 run to break a 13-13 tie. SUU never looked back on its way to a 25-23 win. ??
The Fighting Leathernecks fought back from an early deficit in the second set to take a lead at 18-17 with a kill by Allison Gilbert.
Western eventually extended the margin to 24-21 to force set point before SUU reeled off five unanswered points to seal the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.?
The two teams again kept the scoring close in the third set with neither team taking more than a three-point lead throughout.
Western broke a 16-16 tie with a Cait Egan kill midway through the set and the Leathernecks held the lead for good in an eventual 25-23 win. ??
The fourth set saw the Leathernecks hang with the Thunderbirds until midway through the set when SUU used a 7-1 run to turn a tight 18-17 lead into a sound 25-18 win.
Egan led Western with 17 kills on a .441 hitting percentage (2e, 34ta) while Gilbert chipped in 13 kills. Ellen Miller had 38 assists and 15 digs for her 12th double-double of the season and Brooke Stittleburg had 18 digs to lead the 'Necks for the second-consecutive match.?
Western dropped to 8-14 overall with a 4-7 mark in Summit League play, while Southern Utah improved to 6-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play.?
After playing its last five matches on the road, Western will finally return home for a non-conference match against Drake Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Western Hall.
