Cheers and screams could be heard "All Around the World" Thursday night during Western Illinois University's annual Homecoming performances at Yell Like Hell.
The Western cheerleaders and Marching Leathernecks started the night by getting the energy flowing through Western Hall. They started cheering and got the whole crowd to cheer along with them.
The emcees for the night, Nick McCay and Adam Ludwig, kept the crowd entertained between performances and eventually got the crowd to do the wave. They split the crowd into three sections to do a "W" "I" "U" cheer, then pointed at each section to scream their letter. The crowd burst into laughter as Ludwig pointed at each section in the wrong order and confused the crowd.
The Greeks were hard to ignore while they chanted and cheered for their team throughout the event. Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Chi took first place, Delta Zeta, Delta Sigma Phi and Alpha Gamma Rho took second and Theta Xi, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Pi Kappa Epsilon took third for the large organization category.
"My favorite part about Yell Like Hell was the adrenaline rush that took over as I walked out onto the mat and saw all those people staring down at me, knowing that this moment was what we've worked for the past month and then feeling so accomplished after we finished the routine without any big mistakes," said Eric Guntner, sophomore law enforcement and justice administration major.
As intermission rolled around, royalty chairs Jeri Adams and Katie Butson brought the king and queen candidates to the stage. The tiara went to Melissa Downin, junior elementary education major, and the crown went to Delmar Dade, senior law enforcement and justice administration major.
Thompson took first place for residence halls, Bayliss/Henninger Halls took second, and Tanner took third.
"This was my first time participating in Homecoming, and I had a great time performing in Yell like Hell," said Amanda Ruper, sophomore elementary education major. "I met so many new people from my residence hall and although we didn't place, it was still a lot of fun."
"There were a couple difficulties we ran into while getting ready for the performance," said Ryan Morrill, sophomore law enforcement and justice administration major. "One of them was getting everyone together. It was hard to schedule practices that everyone could attend.
Another difficulty was the lack of cheerleading experience.
The men had to start from scratch while learning how to keep on count, maintain facials and performing stunts."
He went on to say that although there were difficulties, the performances turned out to be a great success as his team took first place.
