The Western Illinois University Student Art League will hold its first-ever costumed bike ride at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
The event, which is open to the entire community of Macomb, is meant to help raise funds for the various needs of Western's art students and the club itself. It is also meant to raise awareness of the group, which serves both the student and local community in many ways, including activities and community service.
Participants in the bike ride can choose from either a 15 or 33 mile route, with water and snack stations located halfway through each for rest and refreshment.
Maps will be given to each rider, and the routes will also be marked along the way by signs painted on the roads. Emergency contact numbers will also be given in case of accident, exhaustion or misdirection.
There is a pre-registration fee of $10 for students and $15 for non-students, though the fee will increase to $17 after Oct. 27.
In addition to the bike ride, there will be a cookout following the event on the lawn of Garwood Hall, which all riders are invited to attend. Non-participants may come to the cookout as well for a nominal fee of $2. Hot dogs, burgers, sides and beverages will be provided. T-shirts for the event will also be available to order at a cost of $10.
The Student Art League provides art students with the opportunity to travel to museums and galleries in other cities for exposure to other artists, which is a great benefit due to Macomb's distance from large art centers. It also helps fund the Art All Nite program, in which Garwood Hall is opened overnight in order to allow students to "cram" for upcoming reviews and entries, working on projects while maintaining a sense of community.
The funds raised from the bike event will benefit the Student Art League in a variety of ways.
"We use the money we raise for transportation on field trips, for food provided at picnics, Art All Nite and gallery openings," said faculty co-advisor Julie Mahoney. "We also use it to pay for guest speakers and life drawing models. Because we are not a sanctioned university club we get no help from WIU so we must raise it ourselves through bake sales, music shows and events like this bike ride."
The event is open to the public because the group feels that it is important to bring the campus and the community together.
"I think that the Student Art League should do all that they can in the community. I hear all too often about how boring and isolated Macomb is," said faculty co-advisor Tim Waldrop. "With that said, the Student Art League should do all that it can to bring more interesting activities to the community … the students involved are becoming more active in doing this. If you want something to happen you have to figure out how to make it happen."
