Journalism Day to clear career path

Journalism Day begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19 with keynote speaker Bernard Schoenburg, as well as many other events on the first floor of the University Union near the Capital Rooms.
Journalism Day, which is held each fall, is a free workshop for those interested in exploring journalism as a career.
Schoenburg is a reporter/columnist for The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill. He covers politics and will be holding a discussion titled, "Politics: Keeping Them Honest," at 10:45 a.m. in the Heritage Ballroom on the second floor of the University Union.
Schoenburg shared the George Polk Award in 1993 for his contribution to a series of articles that linked connections between state contracts and political contributions.
Along with working at The State Journal-Register, Illinois' oldest newspaper, since 1992, Schoenburg also worked for The Associated Press in Chicago and the Bloomington Pantagraph. He graduated from the University of Illinois.
He has covered local and national events including former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Schoenburg has made a name for himself in the realm of political news by holding elected officials accountable for their actions.
The schedule of events is as follows: 9-9:30 a.m. arrival and registration, 9:30-9:45 a.m. brief welcome gathering (Prairie Lounge, 1st floor Union), 9:45-10:30 a.m. breakout sessions with Western Illinois professors (private), 10:45-11:45 a.m. Schoenburg keynote speech "Politics: Keeping Them Honest," (Heritage Ballroom, 2nd Floor Union), 11:45-12:30 a.m. lunch in the Heritage Ballroom where free pizza and drinks will be provided, 12:30 p.m. optional tours of the Western Courier student newspaper office and broadcast news facilities.
In addition to the events planned attendees will also get to meet the Journalism Faculty.
Those attending include: Dr. Mohammad Siddiqi, interim chair of the English & Journalism Department, Bill Knight, interim director of journalism, Dr. Lisa Barr, Mark Butzow, Lisa Kernek, Teresa Simmons, Pearlie Strother-Adams and Richard Moreno, director of student publications.
