Softball wraps up fall season

The Western Illinois softball team finished its fall season with a 5-1 record after participating in the second annual State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship in Normal, Ill., Sunday afternoon.
After the Panthers scored a run in the first inning, the Fighting Leathernecks answered in the top of the third by scoring five runs to take an early 5-1 lead in their first game of the day.
Senior co-captain Lauren Furgala drove in the first run of the inning as she hit an RBI single to left-center field. On the following at bat, sophomore Jamie Goss drove in three more runs when she hit a home run down the left-field line. Junior's Beth Golitko and Erin Schlotfeldt collected singles before senior Lori Pankratz hit an RBI single to center field, giving Western the four-run advantage.
Eastern fought back in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored three more runs to cut Western's lead to one, but the 'Necks were able to hang on to the 5-4 win.
Pankratz picked up the win in the circle, striking out five batters while freshman Kelsey Micheleni picked up the save.
The second game of the day saw Western take on Southern Illinois as the Leathernecks dropped their final game of the fall season, 5-0.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Salukis scored on a two-RBI double by Alicia Garza. Southern Illinois would score three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Western offense was only able to register a total of two hits on the game, one by Furgala and Golitko.
Senior pitcher Kamren Ferguson recorded seven strikeouts in the circle despite the loss.
