The Western Illinois women's soccer team (3-4-1) will host IUPUI (8-2-0) this Saturday at 1 p.m.
This game marks the conference opener for the 'Necks. Western easily won their last game 7-0 over National Association Intercollegiate Athletics member Grand View last weekend.
"All year long the main thing is for us capitalizing scoring opportunities," head coach Tony Guinn said after Saturday's victory. "We've had tons of opportunities all year long and today (Saturday) we capitalized on them."
Western managed to score only seven goals total prior to facing the Vikings.
"Most of the games we've lost 1-0, we've outshot opponents," Guinn said. "It was nice to score some goals before going into conference play."
The 'Necks have gone 2-2 in their last four games.
IUPUI has been dominant all season. The Jaguars picked up their eighth victory in their last game against Murray State, winning 2-1.
The 'Necks are looking to open conference play with a win for the second time since 2004. Guinn is 12-4 in Summit League play.
Last season, the 'Necks finished conference play with a 4-4 record, while the Jaguars posted a 7-1 conference record.
The 'Necks and Jaguars have played a total of 11 games; Western leads the all-time series 6-5, winning five of the last seven. Last year's game was at IUPUI where the 'Necks suffered a 4-2 loss.
IUPUI is second in the overall standings with their 8-2 record; they also come into Saturday's game riding on an eight-game winning-streak.
The Jaguars did not lose a game in the month of September and their only two losses of the season came at home against Eastern Illinois and Valparaiso.
Junior goalkeeper Meghan Tyk tied the school record in career victories with 20 in her second shut-out of the season against Grand View. Overall on the season, Tyk is 3-3-1 as the 'Necks goalkeeper.
Offensively, the squad has nine different players that scored a goal this year. Seven different players have gained assists this fall as well. Junior Jill Kevorkian leads the 'Necks with three goals and one assist.
The Jaguars have also spread the ball around this season with seven different players scoring a goal, along with 10 different players contributing an assist. Sophomore Megan Hock is the Jaguars offensive leader with five goals and two assists.
The Jaguars senior goalkeeper Jamie Farrell has posted a 7-2 record this season with three shut-outs.
After Saturday's game against IUPUI, the 'Necks will travel to Cedar City, Utah for a Thursday evening conference showdown against Southern Utah (2-6-1).
