Peterman was invited to Professional Golf Association amateur tournaments such as the Public Links Championship in Oklahoma for his qualification in the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in New York.
He has followed up with several top five finishes during his fall season at Western.
Peterman opened up the season finishing third at the Fairway Club Invitational at University of Nebraska in mid-September, shooting a three-round score of 211 (72-72-67).
He followed up his performance in Nebraska with another third place finish at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at Kansas State University.
"I really played well at Nebraska, shot 67 in the last round," Peterman said. "It carried into the tournament at Kansas State."
Peterman's latest performance was his best for the season, finishing second at the John Dalio Memorial, which was hosted by DePaul University last weekend. He shot 73 in his first two rounds and posted a 72 in the final round to finish at 218.
"I've been putting really well and hitting the ball great," Peterman said. "It's nice to finally to get some stuff out of my rounds and play well."
Peterman believes his off-season appearances in the U.S. Open and amateur tournaments have paved the way to reach the professional level after he graduates in the spring.
"That definitely opened up some doors for whatever I do after I graduate from Western," Peterman said. "Hopefully turn pro and go from there."
His appearance in the U.S. Open was brief, failing to reach the third round. He was cut after shooting 16 over par in two rounds.
But Peterman thinks there was a lot to take from his first PGA major appearance.
"It was a great experience," Peterman said. "It was tough getting there. It was about 50,000 people (there). It's crazy to play in front of that many people when you're not used to it. But it was a great experience, and I learned a lot from it."
He was also able to meet some professional golfers who helped him try to ease into the next level while at the U.S. Open.
"They had a lot of great tips and insights," Peterman said. "They just gave me some great advice and 'just keep with it, it'll come eventually.'"
Some of the golfers he was able to meet were Tiger Woods, David Toms, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.
"It was just everyone was so nice and greeted me with kind words," Peterman said.
Peterman has two more rounds left to play before the end of the fall season. He will travel to Illinois State University on Oct. 10 for the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate and finishes at Austin Peay in Hopkinsville, Ky. Oct. 20.
