The Leathernecks (3-4-1) dominated the time of possession and held the ball near the opposing team's goal, as junior goalkeeper Meghan Tyk easily tied the school-record for career wins at 20.
Senior midfielder Keeley Murray led the 'Necks in the first half, creating two scores off two assists.
Murray's first assist came off a corner kick and freshman defensive midfielder Katie Condon knocked the first goal in during the second minute of the first half.
Murray picked up her second assist near the end of the first half on a free kick to freshman fielder Abby Davis to put Western ahead 2-0 going into halftime.
"She's (Murray) a captain, so we kind of expect that kind of stuff," said head coach Tony Guinn. "(We) changed her position today (Saturday), which turned out to be a smart thing."
Western had six shots against the Vikings in the first half but went wild in the second half with 19 shots in the second period.
The 'Necks were able to score immediately in the second half in the first 30 seconds when sophomore midfielder Demi Vance broke away from Viking defenders to find junior Caitlin Barrett open in front of the net for Barretts's first goal of the season.
Vance earned her second assist during the 65th minute when she hit sophomore midfielder Nora Potempa for a header goal to place Western further ahead 4-0.
"All year long the main thing is for us capitalizing scoring opportunities," Guinn said. "We've had tons of opportunities all year long and today we capitalized on them."
Freshman midfielder expanded the lead to six with two goals of her own during the final 18 minutes of the match with the first being unassisted.
Freshman fielder Chrissy Campbell scored the final goal of the game during the 83rd minute to make the final score 7-0.
Western scored only seven goals all season prior to facing the Vikings, failing to score in a 1-0 overtime loss to Eastern Illinois the previous match.
"Most the games we've lost 1-0, (we've) outshot opponents," Guinn said. "Today (Saturday) it was nice to score some goals before conference play."
Tyk did not receive much of a test from the Vikings' offense, receiving only three shots the entire game.
She tied the school-record for career wins with former goalkeeper Summer Perala at 20.
Tyk hopes this victory will be the turning point for the rest of the season.
"Hopefully this is the starting point of the season," Tyk said. "Going into conference this week so we really needed to win today."
Tyk will break the record if the 'Necks pull out a victory in their next match at home versus IUPUI Oct. 3.
The match will take place at the John MacKenzie Alumni Field at 1 p.m.
