Western Illinois senior Kyle Peterman finished third individually to help the Fighting Leatherneck men's golf team tie for fifth place at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate Tuesday.
The tournament, hosted by Kansas State at the Colbert Hills Golf Club, was originally scheduled for three rounds, but rain shortened the tournament to two.?
Peterman paired his Monday score of 70 with a 72 in Tuesday's round to tie with Kansas' Nate Barbee at 142. Peterman won the tiebreaker by posting a lower score on the final round.??
"Kyle played very well. He had a really solid day yesterday, which was really tough because there was a lot of wind and a little rain," said Western Illinois coach Mel Blasi. "It was a long course, and that favors Kyle. Not only did he strike the ball well, but he managed his game well. He gave himself a chance to win."??
Peterman's effort helped Western finish with a team score of 308-302-610 to tie with Florida Gulf Coast for the fifth spot.
Kansas State won the event with a score of 287-282-569 led by individual medalist Joe Ida (70-70-140) and second-place finisher Mitchell Gregson (71-70-141).??
Senior Leatherneck Brian Scott improved nine strokes between his first and second round to finish in a tie for 23rd place with an 81-72-153 to post Western's second-highest score.??
"Brian had a rough day yesterday. He learned some things and turned it around today," Blasi said. "It was a very difficult golf course. Brian made some adjustments and hit some more 3-woods instead of drivers. Overall, he just played a lot smarter."??
Behind Peterman and Scott, Jake Weeber tied for 33rd (79-78-157), Andrew Godfrey tied for 38th (78-81-159) and Ryan Franks tied for 42nd (82-80-162).
Playing as an individual, freshman Ben Kilborn finished in 53rd place with a score of 85-85.?
"I think we're better than we played. We really haven't played to our potential," Blasi said. "We've got to get better, more consistent play from the lower guys in our order."
Western next heads to Lemont, Ill. Sept. 27-28 to compete in the John Dalio Memorial hosted by DePaul at the Ruffled Feathers Golf Club.
