Big Pink Volleyball helps cancer-free living
Issue date: 9/21/09 Section: News
Western Illinois University's seventh annual Big Pink Volleyball will begin on Monday, Sept. 28 and continue through Oct. 1.
The games will start each day at 4:30, and it is a single elimination tournament. The theme this year is iPink.
"Students should attend Big Pink to raise money to help support breast cancer, a disease that affects everyone today," said Campus Recreation Graduate Assistant Lauren VanSloten. "The more money we raise, the more people get treatment and take the next step to living cancer free. It is also a great way to get involved on campus and have fun."
The cost of this event is five dollars per person. Six people will be playing on the court at all times, although up to 12 people are allowed on a team. Team entry forms are due by Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Recreation office.
Short-sleeved T-shirts are available for $10 and long-sleeved for $12.
Big Pink Volleyball is held by Thompson Hall, Campus Recreation, University Union Board, University Housing and Dining Services and Western Illinois University.
When the event began in 2002, only six teams signed up and raised $318.75. Six years later, 131 teams signed up and raised $9,602.46. This year they are expecting to make even more.
"We have two organizations that the money is donated to, McDonough District Hospital and The Peoria Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation," VanSloten said. "This money is used for cancer screenings and other research."
