Three-time Grammy Award nominated artist Karrin Allyson will be in Macomb today as a Western Illinois University Bureau of Cultural Affairs (BCA) entertainer.

Allyson's performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall, located in Simpkins Hall.

She broke into the jazz world in 1992, and since then she has appeared in clubs throughout the U.S. (from the Blue Note in New York to Yoshi's in the San Francisco Bay Area), at international festivals (including Melbourne, Australia) and in concert halls worldwide, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

"Allyson knows what jazz singing is all about … sometimes tender, sometimes tough, (she) always strikes the right chord," an Associated Press critic said.

She has recorded 12 discs, her most recent is this year's "By Request: The Best of Karrin Allyson," which is available on Amazon. In 2008, Allyson released "Imagina: Songs of Brasil," which includes 14 songs sung in Portuguese. For her 10th album "Footprints," Allyson worked with lyricist Chris Caswell to put lyrics to traditional instrumental songs of the '50s and '60s.

The singer/songwriter, pianist, composer and bandleader gives an added dimension to her performance with her background in classical training.

Tickets - $15 for the public and $5 for seniors 62 years and older - are available at the Hainline Box Office from 12 to 5 p.m. weekdays, call 309/298-2900. Tickets may also be purchased online. Visit wiu.edu/bca and click on "online tickets" at the bottom of the page.
