The Western Illinois women's soccer team (1-2-1) will compete against Drake University (2-3-2) at 4 p.m. this Thursday.

Thursday's game will be the finale for the Leathernecks' three-game home stand, where the 'Necks have recorded a tie and a loss.

"Drake is a well-coached team," said head coach Tony Guinn. "They have a really long history of good women's soccer programs." Unfortunately for the 'Necks, the Bulldogs have proved it.

Dating back to 2002, the Drake Bulldogs have lost only once to Western in its past four matches, with a record of 3-1.

Last year, the 'Necks were on the losing end of a long-fought game against the Bulldogs. The game went into double overtime, and the Bulldogs were able to score near the end of the second overtime.

"It was a great game," Guinn said. "It came down to the last five minutes. We had a chance to score against them about two minutes before they scored, but their goalie made a great stop on us. It's tough on the road, to lose that way, especially when we played so well."

Drake arrives at Western after a 3-0 victory over South Dakota.

Guinn feels good about the upcoming game.

"We're playing better soccer as the season has gone by, and the kids will rally together," Guinn said. "We can come out with a win on Thursday."

Western comes into play with freshman Courtney Bresnahan, sophomore Demi Vance and junior Jill Kevorkian. Each athlete is tied for the team lead in goals and assists, each having one goal and one assist.

Vance's one goal of the season was a game-winner over Southern Indiana.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Tyk has played 335 minutes this season with 29 saves and has a save percentage of .879 with one shutout this season.

Drake is led by freshman Laura Moklestad and senior Elizabeth Woerle, each scoring three goals this season.

The Bulldogs' sophomore goalkeeper Kourtney Arnold has played 674 minutes with 39 saves with a save percentage of .796 with two shutouts this season.

The 'Necks have completed four games in the regular season and will look to pick up a victory over a formidable foe in Drake.

Western will host the Bulldogs Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. at the John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

Following Drake, the 'Necks will travel to Davenport, Iowa to take on St. Ambrose on Sunday, Sept. 20.
