A tough 1-1 tie to Northern Iowa (4-4-1) on Friday was followed by a disappointing 2-1 loss to Iowa State on Sunday.

This weekend certainly did not go as planned for Leathernecks women's soccer head coach Tony Guinn.

The 'Necks (3-2-2) played well in both matches but were unable to put the ball in the net.

Northern Iowa

On Friday, the Panthers got ahead early off a rebound goal by Northern Iowa's Kiki McClellan.

"I thought that the goal we let by was a soft goal," Guinn said. "We can't allow those kinds of goals to go in if we are going to have a chance to win."

The 'Necks struck back 15 minutes later when junior midfielder Jill Kevorkian received a pass from freshman forward Courtney Bresnahan and scored from six yards to tie at one.

The score remained tied through regulation and into two overtimes.

"I was happy with the toughness we showed after giving up the early goal," Guinn said. "Our kids played hard today, we just let a bad one slip through, and that was the difference between a win and a tie today."

Iowa State

On Sunday, the 'Necks fell behind early again. A free kick allowed the 'Necks to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Demi Vance took the kick and delivered a pass to freshman forward Kellie Julius, who knocked in the score.

"I think both teams played hard," Guinn said. "When you play in 85 degree weather, it's difficult for kids, so the fitness factor comes into play and heat comes into play."

The Cyclones (4-0-3) scored the game winning goal late in the game to make the final score 2-1.

"I thought they scored a goal on the first game, and then we evened up the game 1-1," Guinn said. "Unfortunately we gave up a late goal."

The final outcome of the game was overshadowed by the actions of Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillenger.

Dillenger had her team walk off the field without shaking hands with the 'Necks after the game.

"In all sports there are life lessons, and win, lose or draw I think that you should shake the other team's hands and shake the referees' hands," Guinn said. "Then when the game's over, it's over."

He was disappointed that her behavior would go virtually unpunished.

"I think it says a lot about their program and a lot about the integrity of their staff," Guinn said. "Unfortunately no one will do anything about that in America."

Guinn wants his feelings to be heard by someone and for someone to take actions against her deplorable behavior.

"No one will do anything about it," Guinn said. "She will be able to conduct herself the way she wants to, and no one will do anything to her."

It went as far as her accusing Guinn of sending sophomore midfielder Laura Lins into the game to target an Iowa State player.

"I have no idea, it's ridiculous," Guinn said.

The 'Necks' next match is at Mackenzie Field when they face Drake at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
