The Leathernecks volleyball team (1-4) beat Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (3-1) at Western Hall on Tuesday night and will take momentum from the victory into Chicago this weekend.
"They know what they're capable of, it's just doing it 100 percent of the time that you're on the court," said head volleyball coach Kym McKay. "They're starting to revel in the rewards of playing tough."
The 'Necks will take part in the DePaul Invitational where they will face DePaul on Friday and Clemson and Loyola on Saturday.
"A team like Clemson is going to be physically a little stronger than us," McKay said, "but I think we're a little faster, and I think we have a better defense."
The 'Necks have not faced DePaul in a couple years and are a different team from what the 'Necks have seen in previous years.
"They're a little more physical in terms of their height this year," McKay said, "but if we control our side, play not only just physical but fast paced offense, I think we're going to be fine."
So far this season the 'Necks have a trend of winning the first game, but being unable to come away with a victory in the match. However, Coach McKay has been working hard to break the habit."We have to get a little more mature with how we approach that second game and how we control our urgency and our emotion if we do get down by a couple points," McKay said. "Instead of going into panic mode, we have to get more into a competitive mode."
With a young team, the mental aspect of the game is just as important as the physical. Even though they came away with a win on Tuesday, McKay and the 'Necks know that they can do better.
"I think all the players and coaches know that it wasn't the best thing that we could do and that we played better last weekend," McKay said. "Right now, it's getting back onto the court tomorrow and playing back at that high level that we were at last weekend and then finding a way to stay at that level from match-to-match, day-to- day and week-to-week."
The weekend is going to be a challenge for the team, but McKay is optimistic and feels that as long as the 'Necks continue to play well, they will have a chance.
"I think we have a chance to have three w's this weekend," McKay said, "but also I think all three teams can beat everybody so it going to come down to the mental aspect, the schedule that you're given and who's going to play better at that point."
The Leathernecks play DePaul on Friday at 7:30 p.m., Clemson on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Loyola at 5 p.m.
