The Western Illinois women's soccer team will travel to Indiana this Sunday for a noon non-conference game against the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind.
The Leathernecks (0-1-0) are looking to silence the Screaming Eagles (1-1-0) and gain a victory improving their road and season record.
Last week the 'Necks failed to score against Butler in Indianapolis. The 'Necks will have to effectively take advantage of scoring opportunities against USI sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Connell, who kept her goal empty for 113 minutes during the preseason.
"We just need to work on possessing the ball better," said team captain Caitlin Barrett.
Western's experienced defense will need to be aware of sophomore forward, Nancy Newcomer and senior midfielder Kara Georgeff. Georgeff reached a career high of seven points, scoring two goals and three assists in the 2008 season.
Newcomer had the third most points on the team as a freshman with nine points, scoring four goals and one assist. Both currently have two goals in the past two games of the season.
Leatherneck goalkeeper Megan Tyk, who is one of the few current players to have previously faced the Screaming Eagles last year, only allowed 18 goals in a little less than 892 minutes. In the 2007 season game against USI, Tyk had one save and allowed no goals in 56 minutes of play.
Sunday's match-up will only be the second game that Western will face USI in the past 12 years. In the 2007 season, Western defeated USI with a 2-1 victory, scoring both goals later in the game.
