The University Union Board sponsored Foam Party, Horn Field Campus' climbing wall and the Argyle antique gas engine show and flea market highlight this Labor Day weekend in and near Macomb for those who stay in town.
Western's first ever Foam Party, planned from 8-11 p.m. Friday night, will be held at Vince Grady Field and is free to attend.
"We are certainly hoping the students will show up for it," said assistant director of programming Diane Cumbie. "We were aware of the (number of students leaving), but there are students that don't go home. We want to make sure those students feel like the campus is still alive and vibrant even when the masses are not here."
The event gives students who stay at Western for the weekend a unique opportunity to listen to music and enjoy a light show all while standing in a pit of foam.
"Whenever the question comes up 'do you realize students are leaving?,' we think 'do you realize that there are a lot of students who aren't leaving as well?'" Cumbie said.
The UUB advises students not to leave any cell phones or electronic devices in their pockets while they indulge in the foam.
On Saturday, Horn Field Campus is opening up its climbing wall to the public for a cost of $5. Horn Field Campus is located on China Road about one mile south of Macomb. Along with the climbing wall, there are nature walks through numerous trails that are free to hike.
Later in the semester there will be a high ropes course available as well.
In regard to a lowered attendance at the climbing wall because of the holiday weekend, Rose Gochenaur, graduate assistant challenge course manager, said the staff wasn't concerned.
"We aren't really that worried about it," Gochenaur said. "The idea of having the open climb so often in the semester is so we can give as many students as possible the opportunity to come out."
Lake Argyle and the town of Colchester are hosting the annual antique gas engine show and flea market from Thursday at 5 p.m. until Monday at 1 p.m. at the Lake Argyle State Park.
To go along with these special events, the Harry Mussatto Golf Course will be open all weekend. For students, the course costs $12 for a nine-hole match and $14 for a nine-hole cart with $5 for rental clubs.
