Conspiracy theorists are everywhere among us, spreading dissension and doubt about topics ranging from the somewhat mundane (KFC's famous "mutant chickens") to more serious topics such as Sept. 11 and the War on Terror.

In that vein, dozens of books have popped up in bookstores everywhere, and one of these, "You Are Being Lied To" stands out from the crowd. If you are, ever wanted to be or know someone who is a conspiracy theorist, then this book is guaranteed to send shivers down your spine and get those little gears in your head turning.

Produced by the same people who created the Disinformation media company, which has produced a television show, an extremely popular Web site (www.disinfo.com) and a huge counterculture conference, "You Are Being Lied To" features essays and interviews with academics, scientists and representatives of several alternative movements. Each of the pieces within dissects and/or discredits several aspects of today's culture, including the news media, politics, drugs, sexuality and other societal issues, historical events and figures, the military and religion.

Noted contributors to the book include Noam Chomsky, Howard Bloom, Douglas Rushkoff, James Loewen and Howard Zinn, of whose names many undoubtedly recognize at least one. The writers/interviewees make no apologies for their radical ways of thinking or theories about taboo topics. They see themselves as purveyors of truth, an alternative to a mainstream media that would have you believe the propaganda fed to you on a daily basis or religious figures who place words and outdated thoughts above the idea of human divinity.

In addition to over 50 articles and interviews, the book also contains a few appendices presenting short blurbs discrediting other myths as well as suggested further reading if your interest in alternative thinking has been piqued.

So go ahead, unplug your phone, lock your doors and be sure to have plenty of aluminum foil on hand. You'll need it to hide your thoughts once your mind has been blown.
