Getting dirty for a good cause

Western Illinois University hosted the eighth annual Mud Volleyball Tournament last weekend. The event took place over the course of two days at the North Quad volleyball courts.
Four mud courts, three sand courts, a huge slip 'n' slide and a bags tournament are just a few activities that students participated in at the event.
Although it was sunny all day, the temperature didn't go above 70 degrees. Despite the chilly weather, the thing that students enjoyed the most was playing in the mud.
"It's a little cold, but it's been worth getting all muddy and wet," said sophomore zoology major Stephanie Tomezcko. "It's for a good cause."
"My favorite part has been getting down and dirty," said junior music therapy major Kristen Barnett. Barnett also added that it was nice to be with all of her friends at once.
One of the goals of the event is to get first year students involved in the Western Illinois community.
"I love outdoor events," said freshman law enforcement major Meghan Joyce Vold. "I like to get dirty, and I love being with my floor. I love the music and the atmosphere and the people. Seriously, it's amazing. Try it. I'm going to be the first one to sign up next year."
"My favorite part has been getting muddy, of course," said freshman law enforcement major Steve Edwards. "It's a lot of fun with everyone getting together. You get a real sense of community. You get to meet new people and play competitive volleyball."
The Mud Volleyball planning committee was also at the event all day assuring things ran as smoothly as possible.
"I think it's been running a lot more smoothly than last year," said junior law enforcement major Drew Parker. "It was a lot more organized, so we got done a lot faster. Sponsorship was really fantastic again this year. We've had a lot of prizes to give out. I think it's great how much we can do for charity as well as the students."
Parker added that the event wouldn't have gone as well if it weren't for the hard work and effort of the committee.
