The Leatherneck women's volleyball team began its season with the third annual Purple and Gold scrimmage last Tuesday night at Western Hall.

Whether it was players matched with fans, students versus players, or the inter-squad scrimmage, it seemed the night was an inevitable success.

The night began with the Fighting Leathernecks' usual pre-game warm-up routine and quickly moved into the first contest.

Students were given the opportunity to try their luck playing with and against the volleyball players during the pre-game festivities.

Contests included bumping accuracy, serving skills, and finished with a three-on-three matchup where fans were given the chance to put their skills to the test against the best of the Leatherneck players.

Though the fans came up short in the three-on-three, morale was high as the scrimmage was set to begin.

The Leathernecks took the court for the beginning of their split-squad matchup with excitement filling the arena.

The women would play a scrimmage game to 25 points, giving an exciting glimpse to the 2009 season. The team was split: four players on the White side and a five-player rotation on the Purple team.

The Leathernecks were playing very well together, and the drive to win was visible.

No team pulled ahead until the very end, when the White team prevailed with a 25-23 victory.

Entering her ninth season as head coach, Kym McKay understands what it takes to win.

The 'Necks finished 9-22 last year with a young core of players. The disappointing end to last season left much room for improvement for McKay and the rest of the 'Necks. Some changes were made to improve the team. McKay brought in two new assistant coaches, Melissa David and Kayani Turner.

Both David and Turner bring a wealth of experience that will help turn the team into a perennial contender in the Summit League.

After missing the Summit League tournament last season, the 'Necks are looking forward to what they can accomplish this year.
