Organizers of this year's Mud Volleyball Tournament have two goals: to get incoming students involved in campus events and raise funds for the Macomb Fire Department.
"This is the eighth year (WIU has) put on this program," said Bayliss and Henninger Complex Director Kathy Mortensen. "The goal is to raise more than $4,000 and to have 176 team, which is our max."
The tournament, held at the North Quad volleyball courts, begins Saturday at 8 a.m. and continues through Sunday.
"This will be my fourth year playing mud volleyball," said senior marketing major Dave Arnold. "Each year I've participated on more than one team."
Arnold has been a big part of the Mud Volleyball planning committee for the past three years, functioning as both co-chair of the event, as well as chair of the donations and sponsorships committee.
"Mud Volleyball kicks off the year to get first year students and other students involved in campus programs," said junior pre-med major and chair of the Mud Volleyball 2009 planning committee Allen Hood. "Also, we help raise money for the Macomb Fire Department."
Hood added that the committee sets a goal to raise more money than the previous year. The committee is made up of several students who serve on other subcommittees.
"I serve as the advisor over the whole event," Mortensen said. "I help the students tap into the resources they need in order to make the event successful."
This ongoing tradition plays a big role on campus every year, according to Hood.
"This will be my second year participating in Mud Volleyball," said junior Spanish major Sara Nobbe. "It's a huge deal for Western's campus. And who doesn't like to play in the mud?"
According to Arnold, there will be other accommodations for students not particularly interested in playing volleyball, such as a giant slip 'n' slide, games of bags and a large raffle.
"We will be raffling off over fifteen hundred dollars worth of prizes from local businesses and restaurants," Arnold said. "Also we'll have 10 free Blazin' Challenges at the event with a free Buffalo Wild Wings T-shirt for those who complete it."
"The Macomb Fire Department will be our honorary guests at the event to recognize their hard work and effort given to the WIU and Macomb communities," Arnold added.
