Fighting Leathernecks receive votes in FCS Preseason Coaches Poll

The Fighting Leathernecks received votes in the FCS Preseason Coaches poll Monday. Three Missouri Valley Football Conference teams have been ranked in the preseason polls in UNI (4), Southern Illinois (7) and South Dakota State (23) with North Dakota State and Youngstown State also receiving votes. Last season, Western enjoyed time in the rankings with its highest ranking at No. 12 following a 56-0 shutout over Indiana State.

Five captains named for 2009 season

The Leathernecks chose five captains to lead the 2009 team including Kyle Glazier, Trokon Tompo, Buddy Dudzcak, Matt Barr and Dre Gibbs.

Western Illinois head coach Don Patterson offers his thoughts on each captain:

Kyle Glazier

"It says a lot about Kyle that he would be elected as a captain as a junior. Most people would assume our leading tackler last year was Jason Williams. Not true. It was Kyle Glazier. Kyle has shown how tough he is as a part of our defense and his teammates recognize that."

Trokon Tompo

"Because of health issues Trokon had to miss out on year four in his college career, and he has come back with a vengeance. He places great value on his last opportunity to play college football and his teammates recognize that. He has great passion for the game, and they want him to lead them."

Buddy Dudzcak

"Buddy has played in the shadow of Travis Cherry and Jason Williams the last couple of years, but he is an outstanding football player. He is going to demonstrate that to everyone this fall. He understands that the team comes first, and he embraces the team concept. The players recognize that and it's all about team."
