Sports Corner Bar and Grill and DJ's Steakhouse, both located on the outer north side of the Square where the former Parkside bar and Sapphire restaurant were, plan to open this coming September.

Previous owner Bruce Brown has sold Parkside to new owners Dan O'Neill and Todd Hamilton. Sports Corner plans to be community-oriented as well as college-oriented, continuing with a sports theme. They have already started remodeling earlier this summer. Managers Lindsay Swanson and Alec O'Neill, son of Dan and Linda O'Neill, are also working hard getting everything together. Many different drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, as well as food, will be available at Sports Corner.

"We are trying to keep it fresh. We will have your typical bar food and appetizers, but we will also have many fresh sandwiches and salads," Swanson said.

Along with the food and drinks, the bar will have bands on occasion, and computerized bar games will also be available to customers as well.

Sports Corner is now hiring for the fall semester, looking for fresh new employees. Previous Parkside employee, Kevin Lonkar, senior recreation, park and tourism administration major, hopes Sports Corner will be just as fun as Parkside.

"I'm really going to miss the people who I worked with at Parkside. It was the perfect college job, but this place really sounds like it has great plans," Lonkar said.

The Western Illinois University men's club rugby team hung out at Parkside last 2008-2009 school year on a weekly basis. Adam Wendland, senior marketing major, enjoyed meeting up with his teammates for a few drinks and food.

Although Sports Corner is keeping the focus on sports, there will be a few changes. Sports Corner is going for a new atmosphere, and there is the community as well as the college students to please. They will be getting rid of the karaoke and pool table.

The new hours for Sports Corner will be Monday through Thursday 3 p.m. to midnight, Friday 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Another restaurant opening is DJ's Steakhouse, the second steakhouse coming to Macomb. On Sept. 15, the citizens of Macomb will have yet another restaurant open giving them a wider variety in steaks and many more foods.

Owner of DJ's Steakhouse, Julie Wilfon is going into the restaurant business for the first time. Wilfon is taking her time on working out the details before the opening day.

"The menu is not finalized, and we are still taking applications," Wilfon said. "It is little details that are still being adjusted," Wilfon explained.

DJ's Steakhouse is looking into having their hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
