Issue date: 6/24/09 Section: Sports
With the second semester of the 2008-09 academic year in the books, The Summit League has announced its Academic All-League Teams for the winter and spring seasons and Western Illinois has placed 127 student-athletes on it, the second-most of any league institution.
"Each year the competition within the Summit League, both academically and athletically, continues to rise," Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine said. "I am proud of our sport programs for holding themselves to a standard that is aligned with the core values of our institution. The coaches and student-athletes set the bar high, constantly working toward success, and that's something to be proud of."
A total of 938 Summit League student-athletes from baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field have been honored for their academic excellence, with the Fighting Leathernecks comprising 13.5 percent of the list.
Leading the way within Western's teams, men's golf placed 100 percent of its team on the list (nine) while women's golf (10 of 11 golfers) and softball (15 of 16 players) each placed all but one for their teams. Of 37 swimming and diving student-athletes, 28 earned the honor (76 percent).
Seventy-five percent of women's basketball players and 54 percent of men's basketball players earned the academic honor. Fifty-two percent of the track and field team was named to the all-league team and women's tennis placed exactly 50 percent of its team on the list.
Leatherneck baseball had eight players, while men's tennis had three players who were named academic-all league.
South Dakota State led the way with a league-high 139 selections to the Academic All-Summit League squad, just edging out Western Illinois.
Oakland landed 118, while Southern Utah had 110 student-athletes on the team, followed by North Dakota State with 102.
IPFW (77), Centenary (71), Oral Roberts (64), UMKC (63) and IUPUI (46) rounded out the standings.
Eastern Illinois collected 21 awards as an associate swimming & diving member.
Of the 938 student-athletes that were honored, 119 posted perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester.
Western had 37 student-athletes earn a 4.0 GPA in the spring, which makes up 31 percent of the 119 listed in the league.
In order to be selected to the Academic All-Summit League Team, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 or better grade-point average in the semester in which they compete and must use a year of eligibility.-Western Illinois University Athletics Media Services
