Over the last few weeks the news has been full of incidents regarding the treatment of animals.

With the war in Iraq and the elections in Iran, one might assume the majority of our daily news would contain stories surrounding these issues; however, something as seemingly innocent as a man swatting a fly to the ground caused uproar many probably did not expect.

Can anyone honestly say they have never swatted annoying fly that never goes away? I find it a little overly dramatic that Obama's "fly-swatting" can take such a precedent in the news with so many other issues going on around the world.

PETA even went so far as to send Obama a fly-trapper so that next time he spots a fly, he could trap and free it.

It seems a little unlikely that anyone would pause an interview on national television to grab his "fly-catcher" to avoid killing a fly.

Yes, the president killed a fly.

Newsworthy?

Not exactly.

Don't get me wrong, I am an animal lover just a much as the next person. There are many other stories in the news regarding animal treatment that are definitely more "newsworthy" than swatting a fly.

Recently, a teen in southern Florida has been charged with the vicious killings of 19 cats. The month-long search for the "cat killer" begun after the community began finding their pet cats murdered, mangled, and even skinned on their front lawns.

This, my friends, is disturbing. From what I have read regarding the "cat killer," it appears as though PETA has not yet stepped in. Ironic.

Another recent news story was about a woman called the "bunny lady." The 47-year-old Oregon woman was first arrested after police confiscated over 200 live bunnies from her home and found 100 more dead frozen bunnies.

After stealing back confiscated bunnies, the "bunny lady" was banned from owning or controlling animals, and prohibited from going within 100 yards of a bunny for five years. After police found more bunnies, live and dead, in her hotel room last week it was clear the bunny lover couldn't stay away from these cotton-tailed cuties.

Again, this is disturbing. Where is PETA when bunny-loving lunatics like this woman are on the loose?

Most people I've asked about these crazy cat and bunny killers have never even heard of them, but a dead fly is now famous. It was a f-l-y, people.

Many have obviously lost sight of the actual facts at hand in this situation. PETA starts a huge controversy over a dead insect, yet does not get involved in the malicious murders of these fuzzy pets.

Is the issue really the fly killing or is this just another excuse for our crazed media to bash the President and/or blow things way out of proportion?

There are so many other issues for us to worry about, and a fly, in my opinion, should be the least of our concern.
