Battle of the Boyfriends: Jess Mariano
Two Courier columnists battle over which boyfriend from 'Gilmore Girls' was the best match for Rory

Issue date: 6/10/09 Section: Opinion
The Gilmore Girls offered us three selections of possible suitors for young Rory. Her first, Dean Forester, the good ol' boy next door, Jess, the rebel without a cause who was still finding himself, and Logan, the yuppie party boy. Gilmore Girl fans, who have become somewhat of a cult following similar to Trekkies, followed Rory through each of these roller coaster relationships, thick and thin, makeups and breakups.
And each follower has her own (let's face it - do YOU know any guys that watch Gilmore Girls? Honestly?) opinion as to which boy was best. As a follower of the series, albeit all in rerun form, this critic has to say that the best boyfriend of the show was Jess Mariano, leather-clad badboy himself.
Dean was great and all, if you like that "step on me, I don't have an opinion, I'm gonna pine after you night after night" kind of thing. After Jess entered the picture, Dean was threatened(though he had no reason to be). He turned into a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" personage, snapping on Rory if she so much as blinked at Jess as he sauntered past. Then, after he "lost" her to Jess after proving his lack of trust, Rory no longer became a person to Dean, just a "prize" to be won. Furthermore, Dean then rushed into a marriage and cheated on his wife with Rory in later episodes. What a guy.
Jess is next to enter the picture. The son of a hippie jeweler and a father unknown to him, he moves to Stars Hollow upon having problems at his school in New York. Shortly after moving, Rory becomes his only friend and shortly after her breakup with Dean, the two begin dating.
Naysayers will argue that Jess is a poor choice for a boyfriend because he has bouts of poor communication skills and seems to be followed by trouble. However, Jess has reasons for his actions. He grew up in a broken home, living with his mother who-let's face it-was a little odd. He knew he had a father, but never met him and to the knowledge of this crowd, he never witnessed firsthand a stable working relationship. For the hardships he endured, he did pretty well for himself.
