The Leathernecks will compete against Big 10 opponent Iowa Hawkeyes this week concluding the non-conference portion of their baseball season.

Western got itself back into a winning fever, taking three games in the IPFW series last weekend. Western Illinois gave IPFW a close Game 2 with a six-run seventh inning. The Leathernecks took Game 1, 19-10 and swept the nightcap, 12-6. The 'Necks scored in every inning of the opener except the eighth and ninth innings, and blew open the contest with a six-run sixth inning.

Senior batter Tyler Metcalf took one step closer to beating the all-time single season Leatherneck record on Sunday, making 11 belted long balls for the season. Senior batter Drew Laidig led the team by going 7-for-16 in the series, with two homers and seven RBIs. Junior batter Andrew Hagins also added a pair of homers and drove in seven.

Pitchers Junior Randon Lingle and Senior Eric Eden had one of their best weekends. Lingle went the extra mile in game three, pitching 8.1 innings for his second win of the season. Eden pitched six innings in the opener that picked up the win. Laidig struck out four in five innings in Game 2 of the series. This was his first career win.

The 'Necks will follow the IPFW series with their fifth and final contest of the year against the Hawkeyes at 6:30 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.

Iowa will be an intense competitor for the Leathernecks. In their last meet, they won 20-7. Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 43-24-1. This week they will play with a 14-30 record. They won 20-7 at their last meeting.

On April 29th the Necks played against another Big 10 team, the Indiana Hoosiers. The Necks fell 17-2.

The Hoosier put nine runs on the board from seven hits, six of which were singles, giving Indiana a 13-0 advantage after two. Sophomore batter John Koszulinski had a two hit and RBI performance at the plate.

The six total hits for the offense made a mark for the lowest total since the Necks collected five against Missouri on March 4 of this season.

Indiana's baseball team holds a better record than the 'Necks by seven games, so the 'Necks look to turn their struggling season around against an Iowa team that has had a disappointing season as well.

The 'Necks will begin play against the Hawkeyes today, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. inside Iowa City, Iowa.
