The Westerwinds softball team ended their season on a high note, sweeping this weekend's series against IPFW. With the sweep the 'Winds have won The Summit League regular season title outright, and have picked up their first 30 win season since 2001.
Game 1
In the first game of the series the 'Winds took a 4-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Sophomore infielder Michelle Prieto's RBI single got the ball rolling in the second, and gave the 'Winds a 1-0 lead. An infield single by sophomore outfielder Colleen Biebel allowed fellow sophomore outfielder Beth Golitko to score and bring their lead to 2-0. Junior infielder Julie DePolo finished the scoring for the 'Winds, hitting a two RBI double down the right field line to make the score 4-0 and put the 'Winds in front for good.
It would be all senior pitcher Kamren Ferguson would need as she cruised to her 18th victory of the season. Ferguson gave up only two hits after a pop out and a strikeout got her out of a rough second inning, in which she found herself with the bases loaded and one out.
Ferguson threw her fourth straight shutout, striking out seven and giving up only three hits in seven innings of work.
"Kamren (Ferguson) did really well today, mixing up her speeds and battling with the rain and the slick pitching rubber," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen.
Game 2
The 'Winds trailed after two innings in Game 2, but came back with three runs in the top of the third to give them a 3-2 lead. Junior pitcher Lori Pankratz put the 'Winds on the board with a solo home run, just the second of her career, and freshman infielder Jamie Goss tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Junior infielder Lauren Furgala came up next and gave the 'Winds the 3-2 lead with an RBI double to left center field.
Furgala got the 'Winds going with two outs in the fifth when she hit her second double of the game. Golitko would give the 'Winds a 5-2 advantage when she hit the first home run of her career, a two-run shot over the fence in left. Pankratz put the 'Winds ahead by four with an RBI single that scored sophomore outfielder Michelle Neubauer.
