Higgins Hall will sponsor the annual Dancing for Dreams event in the Western Illinois University Union Grand Ballroom from 8-11 p.m. Thursday, April 30.
Higgins Hall has sponsored Dancing for Dreams since it started in 2007.
This year, Higgins is sponsoring Kayla, a 9-year-old who has a seizure disorder, which she acquired after receiving the chicken pox vaccine when she was 4. Kayla's grandparents and extended family moved to Florida after her diagnosis. Her dream is to visit her family in Florida, go to the beach and visit Disney World.
"This is my first year advising this event for Higgins Hall at Western Illinois University. It has been amazing to see the students of Higgins come together to plan, advertise and help raise money to this extent, but most importantly, to help Kayla and her family raise money for her dream," said Beth Schoenwetter, a college student personnel graduate student.
"I realize money is tight for many right now, but I hope that we can raise enough to make a difference in this little girl's life and to make her dream come true," Schoenwetter said.
There are admission packages available for the event, including a $5 entry fee to dance for fun and watch the performances, an $8 entry fee for a competition wristband to be able to compete and a $15 entry fee for a competition wristband and a 2009 Dancing for Dreams T-shirt.
"Dancing for Dreams is a great cause, and I am so honored to be apart of it," said Kayla Mulquin, sophomore psychology major.
Three competitions will be held throughout the night. Hip-hop/break dance, 90s collage and limbo. Western Illinois faculty will be judging the event and prizes include four 19th row Sox tickets for May 21 including parking passes, an iPod touch, a digital camera, Cubs tickets and other fun prizes.
Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the evening and prizes for raffles and competitions will be handed out at the end of the night.
House Arrest II, Banat Casablanca Belly Dance Troupe and the Tradicion Hispania Dance Troupe will be performing at the event.
"Even if you don't want to dance, you can still come out, have fun and watch performers and different competitions throughout the night," said Lauren Sorensen, junior forensic chemistry major.
Attendees will pay at the door, however the Dancing for Dreams committee will be selling T-shirts and raffle tickets in the Union on Thursday, April 30 before the event.
