The Westerwinds continued their dominance over the rest of The Summit League by sweeping this weekend's series against South Dakota State.
Game 1
The 'Winds (24-17, 15-2 in Summit) went to work early on Friday, going up 2-0 in the first inning after sophomore outfielder Colleen Biebel and junior infielder Lauren Furgala were able to score on two South Dakota State errors. However, the Jackrabbits were able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on a 'Winds error to bring the score to 2-1.
Sophomore catcher Nikki Marinec got the rally started in the sixth with an RBI double. Biebel followed with an RBI single, scoring Marinec, and junior infielder Julie Depolo kept things going with an RBI double to bring Biebel home.
A single by freshman infielder Jamie Goss scored Julie DePolo from second, and a double by junior infielder Lauren Furgala scored the final run of the inning to bring the score to 7-1. The Jackrabbits were able to score one more run to make the final score 7-2.
Senior pitcher Kamren Ferguson got the start for the 'Winds, and had another outstanding performance. She had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning when a single ended her no-hit bid. Ferguson picked up her 14th win of the season after a five strikeout complete game.
"She threw a great game. She had one inning where she was a little shaky and had a few walks, but besides those walks she did a great job," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "I have to give credit to Nikki (Marinec) for calling a great game as the two players worked well together again today. It also helps when her off-speed pitches and drop balls were working as it kept their batters off balance."
Game 2
Once again, the 'Winds were able to start scoring early, when junior pitcher Lori Pankratz hit an RBI single to give the 'Winds a 1-0 lead. The Jackrabbits came back to tie the game at one a piece after a fourth inning single.
The 'Winds tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh to provide some insurance for their pitchers. Furgala capped off the inning with a solo home run to give the 'Winds a 5-1 lead.
