The Leathernecks held their annual spring football game last Saturday, and there was little offense to be seen with the defense dominating the 7-3 affair.
The starting offense turned the ball over on the first drive of the game with an interception by junior free safety Terry Barney. Barney returned the ball for 35 yards after picking off starting junior quarterback Matt Barr.
The second-team offense was unable to capitalize on the turnover as they were forced to a 33-yard field-goal attempt by junior kicker Charlie Jouett. Jouett would knock in the only points of the first-half.
The offensive squads accumulated a total of 122 yards in the game, and 53 of those yards were lost due to the 10 sacks recorded in the game.
Junior defensive end Mike Stieren led the 'Necks with three sacks, while sophomore defensive end Teague Dentino and redshirt-freshman nose tackle Dominick Corsiglia followed with two sacks of their own.
"Mike (Stieren) has had a very good spring," said head coach Don Patterson. "He's very difficult for tacklers to block because he's so quick. It's hard to sustain blocks against him because he does a good job using his hands. He's another guy that seems really comfortable with that defensive end position."
The starting offense would not get rolling until late in the third quarter when Barr completed a nine-yard pass to sophomore fullback Josh Gabelmann, which led to the 'Necks first, first-down of the second-half.
Redshirt-freshman Lamor Hickman led the rushing attack for the 'Necks as he helped move inside the red-zone with rushes of 15 and eight yards. Hickman ended the game with 68 rushing yards on 18 attempts.
The drive resulted in a touchdown in the fourth quarter when Barr completed a 6-yard pass to junior receiver Lito Senatus in the front-left corner of the end zone. It would be Barr's last appearance in the game as he went 3-for-6 with 25 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Senatus led the receiving crop with three receptions for 17 yards and one touchdown.
