'Winds split doubleheader with Cougars

Ashley Campbell collected five RBIs on Tuesday evening at Cougar Field as the Westerwinds softball team split its doubleheader with SIU-Edwardsville.
The Westerwinds (22-17) defeated the Cougars (35-10) in Game 1, 4-0, but lost the second game of the doubleheader, 4-1.
Game 1: Western Illinois 4, SIU-Edwardsville 0.
The Westerwinds used a four-run top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead and eventually hold on for the game one victory.
After a Nikki Marinec ground out to short stop gave Western one out in the inning, Colleen Biebel singled to left field to start the offense. Julie DePolo collected a single up the middle on the next play, giving Western runners on first and second base.
After a Jamie Goss fly out to left field, Western got its second out of the inning. Lauren Furgala loaded the bases for the Westerwinds as she reached base on an error by the Cougar third baseman. Ashley Campbell, batting .556 with runners in scoring position, stepped up to bat with the bases loaded and hit her first career grand slam to give the Westerwinds the 4-0 advantage.
The Westerwinds did not need any more insurance runs as senior Kamren Ferguson (13-7) only allowed one more hit in the entire game after the third inning. The Clinton, Ill., native recorded six strikeouts and only allowed two hits in the complete-game performance.
The Western offense outhit the Cougars by seven in the contest (9-2), but left six more runners stranded on the base paths (8-2). The Western defense took care of business and did not commit a single error to SIU-Edwardsville's three.
The Western offense was highlighted by Campbell's grand slam performance, but a number of other Westerwinds added their names to the box score in the hit category with eight different players pounding out at least one hit each. DePolo collected a game-high two hits and scored a run and Biebel advanced her hit streak to 11 in the victory.
