The Western Illinois men's and women's tennis teams each head to The Summit League championship as the No. 3 seed and square off in semifinal matches Saturday, April 24, at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center.

The Leathernecks (10-15) finished league play with a 4-2 mark, including winning three straight to clinch a spot in the championship. Western faces the No. 2 seed UMKC in the second men's semifinal of the day at 2:30 p.m.

The two teams met in a cluster at Kansas City, Mo., with the Kangaroos taking a 4-0 decision after only playing singles. Freshman Jim Capalbo played at the No. 6 spot in the singles line-up for the Leathernecks and took Nick Hays to a third set before eventually falling, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The first semifinal in the men's bracket features top-seeded Oral Roberts against No. 4 seed IPFW, who is making its first championship appearance, at 9 a.m.

The Westerwinds (13-11) enter The Summit League championship with a league record of 6-2 and are making their third straight appearance at the four-team tournament.

Western squares off against Oral Roberts Friday, April 24 at 5:30 p.m. for the second time in a week after dropping a 4-2 match against the Golden Eagles Saturday, April 18. Junior Amanda Griffin picked up a point for the Westerwinds, defeating Hayden Rush at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4, while junior Stephanie Baumer scored the other point, beating Ana Costa at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 7-6 (3).

The Westerwinds not only have revenge on their mind from last weekend, but from the previous season as well. Oral Roberts ended Western's season in the semifinal of the 2008 Summit League championship with a 4-1 win to advance to the championship match.

If the Westerwinds find their way past the Golden Eagles, they'll take on the winner of the first women's semifinal match that pits No. 1 seed IPFW, who went undefeated throughout regular-season league play, against No. 4 seed Southern Utah at noon.

Both teams are playing their best tennis at the end of the season as the Westerwinds have won five of their last seven matches, and the Leathernecks are on a five-match winning streak.

The individual accolades have followed the strong tennis as well with Griffin's Summit League Player of the Week award from April 13 being followed by Baumer and senior Neil Lesinski sweeping the award this week.
