Following a semester's worth of planning, the 2009 Greek Week culminated in a handful of events and philanthropies spread out during the week of April 12 through April 19.
The variety show, one of the most anticipated events planned, was the highlight of the week. Jennifer Howard, junior fashion merchandising major and member of Sigma Kappa, loves the variety show.
"(I enjoy) the creativity and seeing how other people dance and incorporate the different themes," Howard said.
The night of the big event was brimming with energy, enthusiasm and excitement as the lights in the University Union Heritage room turned down. Adam Schmidt, Greek God and Goddess co-chair, took the stage with co-chair Ashley Suttles to host the Greek Week variety show. The 13 Greek God and Goddess nominees lined up on stage as the audience waited anxiously for the first Greek Week team to perform.
Performing a wonderfully choreographed dance routine based on the Greek Week beach theme, the purple team - Phi Sigma Sigma, Delta Upsilon, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Kappa Alpha Psi - blew the crowd away, snagging first place in the event.
Lots of planning and preparation goes into each team's skit for the variety show.
"It was stressful," said Justin Stroh, junior biology education major, member of Delta Upsilon and part of the winning team. "We practiced 8 to midnight every night for the last two to three weeks. It was just a lot of load plus all your school work."
Some of the other events ranged from building ships out of construction paper and other craft materials to an extensive relay race in the Quad. The competition was intense.
"I like seeing the other teams compete against each other," Howard said. "Even though it's all about Greek unity, the competition makes it a lot more fun."
Unity is the main reason behind the conception of Greek Week. Throughout the year, most fraternities and sororities keep separate, doing their own forms of community service and other activities. Greek Week is an opportunity for members to work together and get to know other houses on campus.
