Finding the perfect wedding dress takes time, diligence and a whole lot of money. Buying a dress from a retailer averages around $500, and designer dresses can cost in the thousands. Even in this time of economic turmoil, people still get married, but on a budget.
Sponsored by the Western Area Career System fashion merchandising class and Western Illinois University fashion promotion class, a Bridal Fashion Show and Sale was held on Saturday in Knoblauch Hall to model and sell donated wedding dresses.
Over 30 wedding dresses, ranging from long, billowy elaborate gowns to short and sweet gowns, were all on sale for $150 each.
"The sell of the wedding dresses for $150 was kind of a looking at community to give something out there in a time of economic downfall," said Susan Creasey, assistant professor in the dietetics, fashion merchandising and hospitality department. "The dresses were donated to WACS. It was a donation to WACS to utilize however they wished."
The sale was used as a fundraiser for the WACS fashion merchandising class to pay for the class trip to Chicago.
Modeling the dresses were six students of Creasey's fashion promotion class. Only a select number of dresses were shown because of the variety of sizes. The models each carried a number for the individual dresses they wore so attendees could pick a certain dress out during the sale.
Courtni Courtright, junior finance major, enjoyed the show. "I thought it was nice and it was cool that it was free and that they have used dresses for cheap."
A handful of students were in attendance as well as future brides from the Macomb community. Even though Courtright was not planning on getting married any time in the near future, she still thought it was a great event to be held on campus.
"If you're a junior or senior some people might be thinking about getting married," Courtright said. "I know some people my age that are already married or getting married, so I think it's a good idea because people are getting close to marrying age."
