This weekend, Western Illinois University will kick off its fifth annual Dad's Weekend, offering daily activities to enjoy both on and off campus.
Director of the Student Assistance and Parent Service Center, Karolynn Heuer, discussed how the event was made to bring families together.
"It gives an opportunity for dads to spend time with their student during a fun-filled weekend," Heuer said. "It's the fifth year and it's probably the largest we had with a record number of dads registered."
Dad's Weekend is not just for students and their dads, however. Heuer also mentioned that students who might have been raised in different family settings get a chance to spend time with whatever father figure they have, whether it is their stepfather, uncle or someone else.
Check-in will be held on Friday in the Student Assistance and Parent Service Center on the first floor of the Union from noon to 6:15 p.m. Also, dads can check in on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Union Concourse. Families will receive their packets and wristbands at registration.
If your father is a sports fan, there are numerous events set up he might enjoy. Distinguished Alumnus and the World's Fittest Man, Joe Decker, will be holding a Fitness Bootcamp from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center. The Westerwinds softball doubleheader will also take place on Friday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Women's tennis matches will be taking place on Saturday, 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m.
Golfing will also be available from 8 a.m. to dusk on Sunday at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course. An 18-hole game will cost $25 per person (including the cost of a cart) with a printable coupon you can find online. Also, Horn Field Campus will be offering open climbing at $5 per person and a high ropes course at $10 per person. For both events, participants must be 18 years of age or supervised by an adult.
The rec center will also be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 11 p.m. on Sunday, and racquetball will be available all day on Saturday and Sunday. Fishing, camping and small boat rentals will be available at Argyle State Park and Spring Lake throughout the weekend.
