Western Illinois University has many different dance teams, some more well known than others. There are the

Westernettes, formerly known as the Wranglers, as well as House Arrest II, UDT (University Dance

Theatre) and Fusion.

One team commonly overlooked is the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center Dance Troupe. The GBCC Dance Troupe will be putting on their spring concert Wednesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Union Grand Ballroom.

The show is titled "Breakout-The Great Xscape" and will feature a variety of dance styles performed by both female and male dancers.

The Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center is an organization that, according to their mission statement, "provides ongoing cultural experiences, academic enhancement opportunities and social programs designed to aid in the adjustment of African-American students at Western Illinois University."

The GBCC Dance Troupe is like no other dance team on this campus. Most teams, although extremely talented, focus mainly on one type of dance. This troupe performs hip-hop, jazz, lyrical, spiritual and various other types of dances.

For some odd reason, the GBCC Dance Troupe is often compared to the House Arrest II dance team. House Arrest II is an amazing group of hip-hop dancers who perform with an energy like no other group on this campus, and although the GBCC Dance Troupe does its fair share of hip-hop, the two teams are completely different.

As a dancer and former member of the GBCC Dance Troupe, I can give you many reasons to come to the show and support the amazing dancers.

One big perk to the show is that it is free of charge, not only to students, but to everyone in

attendance. The doors open at 7 p.m., and in the past, there has often been a fairly large group of individuals in attendance, so you should arrive early to get a good seat.

Another perk and one of the best qualities of the dance troupe is the variety of dance styles they provide. If you are the type of person that hates hip-hop or simply does not understand the whole modern dance movement, then there will still be quite a few dances that you are sure to enjoy.

Dancers on the troupe are dedicated and talented. They bring many different levels of dance experience to the table and always put on a good show. The level of commitment and passion these dancers possess turns into energy and gives the crowd a great show.

The troupe has been preparing all semester for this performance, practicing around six to eight hours a week, with rehearsals this week totaling practice time upwards of 12 to 15 hours.

Each show is different from the last. The troupe is constantly getting new dancers as older ones graduate. Different dancers mean different choreography and a unique

performance.

"Breakout-The Great Xscape" will not only feature one of the most diverse groups of dancers on campus, it will show Western students once again just how talented the GBCC Dance Troupe is.
