The Westerwinds softball team swept conference foe Southern Utah this weekend with big offensive outputs in each contest.
Junior shortstop Lauren Furgala was the hero of the first two games, hitting two home runs and tallying seven RBIs in the two contests. She collected four RBIs in the first game and led to a rally for the 'Winds in the seventh inning that resulted in the 11-8 victory.
"We were stringing hits together, people were stepping up when they needed to and it all contributed to a great team effort and two wins today," Furgala said.
Game 1
The Thunderbirds came out the gate swinging as they opened the game with a four run advantage. The 'Winds battled back to cut the lead to two in the third when junior infielder Julie DePolo hit a two-run home run.
Western inched closer, scoring a run on a sac fly by sophomore catcher Nikki Marinec but the Thunderbirds exploded for three runs in the fourth, putting the 'Winds in a deeper hole.
The tide would turn again for the 'Winds as Furgala blasted a three-run bomb to tie the game. She led the rally that put the game out of reach in the seventh. Western scored four runs in that last inning and took the first game 11-8.
"The thing I love most about our team is that our wins are a team effort," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "It is just not one person leading the offense and we were getting hits up and down the batting order today. I am very proud of the team because it was a true team effort."
Senior pitcher Kamren Ferguson recorded the win from the mound. Ferguson recorded three strikeouts in six innings of work. Freshman pitcher Ashley Campbell earned her first save of the season.
Game 2
The phrase "better late than never" fit the way the 'Winds were able to score runs and take the game in the second contest of the series 14-5.
Western scored nine runs on 10 hits in the eighth inning to take the lead and the game. The 'Winds loaded the bases and freshman first baseman Jamie Goss kicked off the scoring barrage with an RBI single.
