'Winds split home weekend matches

The Western Illinois women's tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches, dropping the opener to Chicago State, 6-1, before rebounding to pick up a 6-1 win against North Dakota at the varsity courts at Western Hall.
The Westerwinds (9-10) opened the doubleheader with a 6-1 loss at the hands of Chicago State. Western's lone point of the match came at No. 6 singles with a default victory for junior Courtney Brooks. Junior Amanda Griffin battled tough in the first set, losing 7-5, before eventually dropping the second set 6-1.
Playing North Dakota State for the second time in two days in the second match of the day, the Westerwinds kicked off the match by winning two out of three doubles match to earn the doubles point. Griffin teamed with senior Zi Wang to blank the Fighting Sioux's top team of Brynne Wischer and Emily Callison at No. 1 doubles, 8-0. Sophomore Kate Kennedy and junior Courtney Brooks clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Katie Wessman and Tiff Reisneauer.
In singles action, Western took five out of the six matches to claim the victory against North Dakota. Wang and junior Yana Meinert each claimed super-tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 5 respectively. Kennedy only allowed her opponent four total games in her 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Reisenhauer at No. 5.
Other singles winners for the Westerwinds were Griffin (No. 1, 7-6 (6), 6-4) and junior Stephanie Baumer (No. 3, 6-1, 6-4).
Western hosts a Summit League cluster next weekend, April 17-19, where it will play four league matches at the varsity courts next to Brophy Hall.
