The Western Illinois men's golf team carded the second-best round of the day Sunday, April 12, wrapping up the Adidas Hoosier Invitational in a tie for third place.
The Leathernecks shot 291 in the third and final round to tally a total score of 879. The mark tied Purdue and Indiana's B team for third place while Eastern Kentucky came in second at 866 and Indiana won the tournament at 839.
"I thought we played extremely well in the first round and the third round," Western Illinois coach Mel Blasi said. "We got a little tired during the second round of the 36-hole day. But overall, I was pleased with our competitiveness and our finish."
Junior Kyle Peterman was Western's top individual finisher, taking ninth place with a three-round score of 215 (72-71-72).
"Kyle was very consistent. Today he got off to a rough start and really battled back," Blasi said. "He was four over through 12 holes and played the last six holes three under."
Blasi also credited senior Jason Woll with having a strong tournament. Woll finished in a tie for 10th place at 216 (67-76-73).
"Jason had his career-low round in the first round with a 67. That was just a great score," Blasi said. "He really picked the rest of us up in the first round."
Also for the Leathernecks, Brian Scott tied for 28th at 223 (73-76-74), Jake Weeer tied for 44th at 228 (79-77-72) and Ryan Franks tied for 69th at 234 (76-80-78).
"We talked about being tired after a long week, playing Monday and Tuesday at Branson Creek and then coming back to play here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday," Blasi said. "It was nice to see us come back today and play well."
"It is the first time we have played 36 holes in one day at a tournament since October," he continued. "The conference tournament starts with 36 holes in one day, so it was good to get that experience in."
