Horn Field Campus held open climbing on their climbing wall on Saturday, April 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Horn Field Campus, which consists of 92 acres of woodlands, prairie and nature trails, is located about one mile south of Macomb.
People of all ages from Western Illinois University and the surrounding community came to climb the wall. The climbing wall has one side that is sloped at an angle for beginners and younger climbers. The two other sides of the wall are at a 90-degree angle and vary in difficulty.
Safety is important at Horn Field, and there were instructors available to help even the most novice climber and ensure safety. Specific verbal signals between the climber and the instructor provide safe communication so no one is caught off guard. Horn Field also provides top-notch safety equipment to all climbers, which is included in the climbing fee.
People can enjoy open climbing dates or individual climbing parties.
Horn Field Campus can accommodate a wide variety of events, including family reunions, youth group get-togethers, business meetings, weddings, conferences, retreats and other social and business gatherings, and is open year-round.
Groups of up to 25 people can reserve the climbing wall for private use. For $100, a group can reserve the wall for one to four hours, and groups made up of adults and children are welcome. The rental fee provides for all the necessary safety equipment and at least two instructors to assist climbers.
Horn Field Campus holds other events in addition to open and group climbs, such as the teams course program, which is a course presented in a noncompetitive setting that builds comfort, trust and problem solving skills among groups.
The program begins with activities to build trust and make the group members feel more comfortable with each other. The group is faced with problem solving activities, which allows them to work together, and during the program group discussions are held in order for the group members to discuss what they have learned.
"Our teams course is a very popular program," said Mindy Pheiffer, recreation park and tourism administration instructor and Horn Field program coordinator.
There will also be other dates available for those that are interested in taking their turn on the climbing wall.
"Today was the first day of the season," Pheiffer said. "There are four more days for open climbing in the spring season."
The other dates available for open climbing are April 18, April 25, May 2 and May 9. There is a $5 fee each day for open climbing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
