The Leathernecks golf team won the Branson Creek Invitational to take its second tournament victory of the spring season.

Junior Kyle Peterman led the 'Necks, finishing in a tie for second overall in the individual standings. Peterman rebounded from a first round 79 to shoot two under par 69 in the next round, placing just one stroke behind Brandon Crick from Nebraska.

"Kyle is very capable and it is nice to see him kind of settle down and relax after yesterday," said head coach Mel Blasi. "He stayed patient and waited for his opportunities."

As a team the 'Necks shot a second round 299 to go along with a 300 in the next to finish eight strokes ahead of the second place Arkansas-Little Rock, which shot a 608. The teams played 27 holes on Monday and finished the tourney with nine on Tuesday.

"We've faced a lot of adversity this year on and off the golf course, and I couldn't be more proud of these guys," Blasi said. "I have always wanted to win this tournament. This is one of my favorite courses, and to win here is just huge."

In addition to Peterman, the Leathernecks had key contributions from junior Ryan Franks who shot a 71 and 79 in both rounds respectively. Junior Brian Scott (79-71) tied for fifth place with his teammate Franks.

Senior Jason Woll, who placed 14, shot a 73 and 80 respectively, and junior Jake Webber finished out the 'Necks players and placed 40.

Blasi said Woll and Franks provided a boost on Monday and had good rounds despite the cold weather conditions.

"That was a big pickup from those guys that played well yesterday," Blasi said. "When your number five guy (Franks) shoots par, it is just a huge boost."

The 'Necks' next contest will be in Bloomington, Ind., where they will compete in the Hoosier Invitational on April 11-12.

"(The Hoosier Invitational) is a good field for us," Blasi said. "It's a nice mix of some big schools and a lot of mid-major schools like us. It should be some good competition."
